Preparing Wicker For Winter Storage
11.30.07 - 12:53pm
Wicker furniture can be stored in an unheated porch over winter, but don’t store heavy items on the wicker or try to use it when it’s cold. Certain lacquers and paints used in manufacturing are drying to the wicker, so you should wash and oil the piece before storage if it feels dry:
- Clean your wicker by spraying with a hose or in the shower. Lightly scrub with a soft brush and gentle soap. Rinse with water.
- Using a paintbrush, apply a good-quality lemon oil (no linseed or tun oil). Pay special attention to the underside. Let this sit for a few hours and then wipe off any excess.
- The porch is a good place to store the wicker while it is absorbing oil and becoming more supple.
